New York Senator Hillary Clinton will become the first challenger to a presumptive Democratic nominee for president to be placed in nomination at a party convention since Jerry Brown in 1992.
Clinton husband, Bill, had a clear majority of convention delegates sixteen years ago. But Brown, running then as a maverick reformer, wanted to address the convention -- in hopes of advancing what he referred to as a "humility agenda." The Clinton camp said "no."
Convention rules stated that anyone could second his or her nomination, so Brown had his name placed in nomination and then came to the podium to second himself. He eventually won 596 delegate votes to 3,372 for Clinton.
If Hillary Clinton's delegates stick with her through a full roll-call in Denver, it will be much closer: Going into the convention, Obama has 2,201 likely votes to 1,896 for Clinton.
But, unlike Brown in 1992, Hillary Clinton will not be banging too hard on the presumptive nominee or the party.
The nomination and roll-call vote will be good theater -- providing a little dramatic tension at an otherwise over-managed convention -- but little more.
Clinton is saying now and will continue to say that having her name placed in nomination is more about building unity than highlighting divisions.
There's no question that many Clinton backers are diehards who are not just more loyal to her than to Obama but who really want to make a statement about the historic significance of a woman getting as close as the former first lady did to the nomination and the presidency.
The point of the roll-call vote at the convention will be to give them an outlet, say both the Clinton and Obama camps.
This is the "catharsis" Clinton spoke of when she said recently that "the best way I think to do that is to have a strategy so that my delegates feel like they've had a role and that their legitimacy has been validated..."
Here's the joint statement from the Clinton and Obama camps:
Since June, Senators Obama and Clinton have been working together to ensure a Democratic victory this November. They are both committed to winning back the White House and to to ensuring that the voices of all 35 million people who participated in this historic primary election are respected and heard in Denver. To honor and celebrate these voices and votes, both Senator Obama's and Senator Clinton's names will be placed in nomination."I am convinced that honoring Senator Clinton's historic campaign in this way will help us celebrate this defining moment in our history and bring the party together in a strong united fashion," said Senator Barack Obama.
Senator Obama's campaign encouraged Senator Clinton's name to be placed in nomination as a show of unity and in recognition of the historic race she ran and the fact that she was the first woman to compete in all of our nation's primary contests.
"With every voice heard and the Party strongly united, we will elect Senator Obama President of the United States and put our nation on the path to peace and prosperity once again," said Senator Hillary Clinton.
Senator Obama and Senator Clinton are looking forward to a convention unified behind Barack Obama as the Party's nominee and to victory this fall for America.

Ya think Jom? I saw an absolutely pathetic interview this evening with the head of PUMA and another Clinton supporter. Logic seems to have escaped these folks, it was like arguing here with Frank. They couldn't come up with a good reason to support John McCain EXCEPT he's not Barack Obama. Their support for Grandpa is tepid at best, but as soon as Obama's name came up it was like a fireworks show. I refuse to believe Hillary throws all that away, not when she really is so close. Only the darkie stands between her and ultimate power, even now. She's just playing nice right now because she has to, but watch this floor show turn into a drag-out fight.

Catharsis, Greek for a purging.
As in a cleansing out.
As in enema.
Or will it be another kind of purge?
Are the Clintons willing to risk all & take sabotage public?
Or in stealth can they keep Obama out of the WHITE House & return to save US in '12?
The suspense is killing.
Meanwhile, in the Caucasus, in Iraq, in Afghanistan ...

This is getting ridiculous. So the convention is hijacked in order to appease these people. Maybe if Hillary stops egging her supporters on, in this losing battle, maybe they would be able to move on. Baby-booming white women love themselves some Hillary. When I went to the AFSCME convention, some 50-ish lady from Iowa was cumming on herself when Hillary came to speak. Earlier I had heard her talk about how Hillary is the only one who can turn this country around. I was not surprised but curious as to how her supporters can't move on for the betterment of the party. Oh well. The DNC should be drama-filled. I might watch it with my mother just to see her curse at the screen when Hillary comes to speak.

Okay, back on topic.
Now that Obama has conceded that FL and MI should count in full, he has made it easier for Hillary to get enough supers to switch to her and give the nomination back to its rightful heir.

hmmm...
maybe its like a good old fashioned bat stompin'. i had a (apocryphal) friend who happened to be a hard core lirertarian who had a massive bat infestation in his house. according to him the bats were protected or something so one day he rented some kind of industrial smoke stake vacuum and proceeded to suck out 12 bags of bats, according to him, which i would take to mean more like maybe 3 to 6 bags, tops. then he put on his jump boots and proceeded to stomp them to death, one load at a time.
the above is, of course, an urban legend i just sorta made up, based on random bullshit and the tenuous claims of a certified bullshitter, but it kind of reminds me of this cathartic event. the source of the urban legend reported a high degree of cathartic emotion while he saved his property from them bats, especially the stomping part.
ah, the gothic south!
well, much like a good ol' fashioned bat stompin', i hope the hard core hillaristas enjoy their cathartic moment and then jump on board...

Well, most of the wires were already disconnected from those buttons, so it really didn't matter. "The flight attendent was some union thug who wanted a freebie"???? Gee, Darin...STRETCH much just for a slam on the Left???
On-topic, this Hillary thing will be a test of how REALLY smart the Clintons are.
At this point, they BETTER see to it that they work hard and PUBLICLY to get Obama elected. If it looks like they are shirking one bit...and he loses....HER political career is over.
No, no 2012 in her future (even with a McCain Presidency...sorry, FRANK), the blogs will light up...then the networks....then the newspapers with "Did Hillary cost Obama the election?" and her political capital and those who want to be in the same photograph will her will dry up.
ANY hint that she's going to "let Obama go under so that she has '12 free and clear"...will sink her.
They may WANT to do it (certainly her cultists want the Clintons to do it)...but if it LOOKS like they're doing it, in any way, and Obama loses this fall... she's toast.
Kucinich will have a better shot at the Dem nomination than Hillary would.

"kk330, Just why, exactly, would the. aFSCHJCSFWdQ or any other alphabet soup group on govt workers need a union anyway? Fraud of private competion?"
It's not a matter of needing a union (although I would argue it is needed), but wanting it. Last I checked, choosing your way in life is called democracy, and card check will go a long way towards getting more of it.

"Then, why does your icon, George McGovern, oppose card check as totally UNDEMOCRATIC? Anybody else notice the MSM totally ignored McGovern's well-reasoned opinion carried, to my knowledge, ONLY in the WSJ? Thomas Sowell has a piece today that sounds just like McGovern.....and points out, simply, how Magic is beholden to, horrors, "special interest groups" such as the unions, greens, and the teachers unions......Surprise!"
McGovern opposes this form of card check just as he opposes the current form of voting for a union as both allow for intimidation. Still, card check is the way to go, and do it just like voting, with anonymity and without coercion. If we can vote for a president that way, we can vote for democracy in the workplace that way.
Speaking of special interest groups, take a look at how military folks overseas in places like Iraq and Afghanistan are giving to Obama, something like 6:1 over McCain. Fuckin' anti-American soldiers.
Meanwhile, the ultimate special interest group, corporations, lavishes both candidates.
Posted by onthehelm at 08/15/2008 @ 11:09am
Why would McGovern be my icon? Last I checked, he was not one of the two senators who voted against giving Johnson unfettered war power--one being from this fair state of Oregon, I should add. Only in a world where unquestioning fealty to corporations is considered saintly would McGovern be considered any sort of a radical.

Now look at what Al Gore did after the election was stolen from him-- talk about a major come back in popularity and power.
If only Billary were to see Al as an example of what can be done without jeopardizing the dem party.

No, notice the caveats I put in there.
It must APPEAR as if Bill and Hillary are working to their maximum to get Obama elected. Any hint that they're not...it's over for her.
PUMA and whatever other HRC cult groups have GOT to be stomped and stomped hard by Hillary...or (if Obama loses) November 5th the stories start spreading that she and Bill "sabotaged Obama".
That happens? She might need to worry about her Senate seat in 2012...because she won't NEED to worry about securing the Democratic nomination, a three-legged mule or Kucinich would win before she would.
As for a post-Obama victory career for her? There's a SWEETER job she could get....Senate Majority Leader.
It would mean lots of power, lots of Sunday morning talk show appearances, and NONE of the responsibility (or blame) that a President gets. All three factors that should greatly appeal to Hillary.

Nope...you're seeing it wrong. It would allow her to (A) appear to be supporting Obama on agenda items she'd support AND take credit for them passing...
(B) stop agenda items she didn't like or wanted to alter...
or (C) if something failed to pass, she could blame it on "The White House (aka Obama) failing to get out in front of the Republican distortions of the bill" and pass the buck to Obama.
So...she either looks powerful (if successful)...or powerful (by setting the agenda)....or BLAMELESS (if something failed).

First, all that "Senate Majority Leader" thing is premised on is Obama winning in November. If he loses (and no fingerprints of Hill or Bill are on the defeat), then she makes her run for 2012.
If he wins, she has no choice if she is ambitious and wants SOME major power position. There's nothing else on the Federal level (except Veep, which she isn't getting or Speaker, but she's in the Senate, not House) that matches SML for power.
As for "The Senate won't vote for her"....sure they will. If "President Obama" backs her and Reid can be convinced to retire OR (how about this) if Harry Reid is given a CABINET post and HRC becomes "presumptive nominee" to fill his spot?

in 15 days and a couple hours (or a bit more than 360 hours)....Barack Obama's nominee for Vice-President will be speaking before the Democratic Convention....likely we'll know his or her name sometime slightly before that.
So...in less than 2 weeks, we'll learn (I bet) that it WON'T be Albert Arnold Gore, Junior.
What's next on the HSUB Fantasy List after that? PLEASE don't tell me you're going to go into a "Gore still might run as an Independent"....or worse (FRANK-like) and say "It might be better for McCain to win, so that Al can run and win easily in 2012"!!!

One does not give ones back to a wounded bull in a bull fight until one knows for sure the bull is ready to drop from complete defeat and exhaustion. Only a fool would do that and Obama appears to be everything but.
So why would Obama back Billary for majority leader after 'he' wins-- when there are others in the senate already lined up that have a lot more seniority, knowledge, power and he knows she'd just as easily stab him in the back for her own political gain. Specifically what would Obama have to gain by giving Billary more power when he no longer has to and when he'd be losing more votes he needs in the senate by doing so? He'd be losing lots of political capital to get her there when she's still a threat; makes no sense.

I am SO sick of the Clintons. This is a very big mistake for Obama. The party needs only one thing, to clearly move on from the Clintons. Allowing this Clinton theater at the convention does not make sense; neither is the party nominee. Obama will overshadow both of them, of course, as he has throughout the campaign. But, this should be his moment and his alone.
Happy, I'm probably late to the party. I don't read these posts often. But, you sound like a racist.

"Despite those findings, there are signs of deep divisions among Democrats: If Clinton loses, a 54 percent majority of her supporters says they would rather have former Vice President Al Gore as the party's nominee than Obama (31 percent). Obama supporters are more evenly split: If he loses, his supporters would only slightly prefer Gore (46 percent) over Clinton (44 percent)."

They've tried, but all they can come up with is The Hustle, the peddling of access & celebrity, the appearance of caring, without real commitment.

Oh yippee her whiny sore loser supporters think that the fact that *their* presidential candidate didn't get the nomination is somehow more special than the other supporters of any of the other 50 or 60 presidential candidates who didn't get the nomination.
Why Won't They Just Grow Up.

AND
This is getting ridiculous.

Well let them vote for McCain then! The idea of the party being held hostage by a bunch of crazies like the Hillaristas annoys me no end.
Posted by KSP556 at 08/15/2008 @ 4:02pm
I'd like to see Clinton's name be taken out of nomination, and her supporters ejected from the Convention premises.
Sure, a few will be angry and vote for McCain in November, but most will realize there's no other place to go and vote for Obama.
Posted by KSP556 at 08/15/2008 @ 4:33pm
Franklin, Do you really think that angry, frustrated Hillaristas are going to vote for McCain over Obama? Some, yes, but as many or more, no.
What you don't understand is the sheer nausea that the Clintons engender in people. If they had a whit of class they'd exit the public stage and live out their remaining years in the Maldives. But alas, they have no class whatsoever.
Posted by KSP556 at 08/15/2008 @ 4:45pm
It's quite sad that Hillary's staunchest supporters are so immature, but that's reality and Obama has to deal with that reality since there is enough of them to cause problems..Fortunately,the Clintons will get their last say at the convention and then become irrelevant as the country focuses on Obama and McCain.
Posted by i'm nobody at 08/15/2008 @ 4:46pm
Couldn't the party just find the biggest nearby zoo and let Clinton's supporters hoot and holler there?

"So, you think "card check" is nameless, aka: anonymous! What's to prevent unions from placing a `check' on as many cards as needed? Grow up!"--2HAPPY
I don't recall ever writing card check was nameless, much less anonymous. I said it should be, like our political elections are supposed to be. Reading is an excellent skill, often taught in first grade. Try growing--any direction will do.
Now, then. Placing a check on as many cards as needed implies that the union must be the sole controller of the cards. Not sure why this must be.
More importantly, you have created a straw man. The clear and documented coercion occurs on the side of management. At the very least, as you seem to be someone who cares about fairness, at least in terms of what you deem political correctness, you should support the theoretical union skulduggery you mentioned. It would only be a step towards leveling the playing field.

Wow, coming from someone on this site, that's practically a compliment. Thanks. I know it's not very constructive, but I thought it was kind of funny.
I was inspired to write it by a bumper sticker I saw the other day that said "Obama '08: Hope, not Fear". Now THAT was funny. I've been listening to Obama's speeches and the only 'hope' he holds out to his supporters is to give them something they didn't earn, while at the same time pandering to their sense of envy, jealousy, entitlement, and resentment. The same sort of pandering that con men throughout history have used to dupe the rubes. As they say, you can't cheat an honest man, and there ain't many in the Democratic Party.

Why is it that the Clintons always remind me of 'aliens' inhabiting an 'X Files' series.
Jerry Brown had a completely different agenda than Bill's in '92 which is why it made sense for him to be heard. Hillary and Barack have basically the same platforms - which is why the primaries devolved into petty bickering and name calling.
No, Hillary's ego needs stroking. Not only that, Bill has, according to him, sacrificed his entire life for the American people. And now by not nominating a Clinton, the American people have committed a mortal sin and the sins of the people must be visited on Barack Obama. Got it?
Posted by felicity at 08/16/2008 @ 3:06pm
Of course in your reasoning you've factored in the fact that Hillary is the first viable female candidate and that the overwhelming support she enjoys because of that fact cannot be factored out. Posted by frankgrits at 08/16/2008 @ 4:05pm
So people are only voting for Hillary because she is a woman? Just like you think Barack only gets black votes because he is black. How are these two things any different?
Posted by Cccomfo1 at 08/16/2008 @ 4:44pm
Anyone remember what happened to Russia, post-Soviet invasion, and Bill's role in backing Yeltin as he slaughtered thousands of dissidents in the name of democracy? Yeltsin had a 6% approval rating, and he and Bill Clinton stood together to plow full speed ahead with the very undemocratic rape of the public . Don't be fooled by false Democrats again.

Why this ol' Clintonian HATES the Clintons. Hillary has done more damage to Bills legacy then that BJ could have ever accomplished. Her Loyal devotion & support of Mac (and fellow Armed Service derelict) Her "Obliterate Iran"- sounds like Mac's "bomb bomb bomb" Her intentionally pitting gender against race- dividing & conquering the Equal rights Movement. Using the Womens movement, while at the same time undermining our efforts to prove our abilities without lowering the bar, re calcualting numbers, changing the rules. Claiming Exec experience- esp in the ace of past indictment the Clintons were a Co presidency. I personally fought to dispel that idea- she just came out an confirmed it!Was she privvy to top secret information & meetings- was she a decision maker? They have some explaining to do.If not she used this once again to put forth the fallacy women need to ride their husbands coattails. That twisted logic means I'm qualified as a Union Journeyman, I've been married to one for 18 yrs! then of course the real revealing of her Red slip....RFK assasination- 3 times . Once a mistep, twice a freudian slip, third time A REQUEST!!! the clintons have made it very clear they are using tactics right out of the Neo Con handbook- and then turning over their gains to those who Pull Mac's strings. HER donors and associates have injected themselves into Obama's campaign...Now there is questions about his Corp affilations, about his policies..Since Hillary released her Dogs on Him. if he hadn't would she have used them to work against him. Come on, she hasn't conceded, released her delegates and Now wants a Roll Call! Mac has granted her his one term promise- she is drooling and undermining Obama so 2012 can be the year the Neo Cons Crown her!

Sorry it's taken so long to respond. I see there are miscnceptions about local government work. You can be fired, there are just steps you take before one is out-and-out fired. If you make over a certain amount, then there are no steps, you can be fired immediately. In Atlanta, your raise was tied into how well you did on your evaluations. The better your evaluation, the more of a raise you'd get. Of course the raise would be no more than 3% percent anyway, so whoop-dee-do. Government employees aren't the only ones represented. We represent cafeteria workers and private medical workers( i.e. billing). Also we are heavy competition with private contractors. While I will concede they can bring down some costs, unfortunately that has not been the case with Atlanta. they decided to privatize the drinking water system. It totally fucked up the system. But that's just where I live/work. Alot of people who work for the City also lives in the city so there is motivation to do the best job you can. Don't get me wrong there are lazy people in all jobs. I've seen it in the private sector as well as in governemnt. Noone holds the majority on lazy workers. Now as far as card-checking, I don't see a problem. Shouldn't voting be a private affair? I did hear/read(I can't remember which) about this but it didn't come up at the convention.
Another thing about unions in government is that managers/supervisors do not always play by the rules that they set. One reason I became a union steward was to make sure there was a level playing field in how workers were being treated. All I work towards, as best I can, is fairness and equity in the workplace. Thanks for the props, KP556.

Unions can only do what the members allow them to do. If the members don't provide oversight for their executive board, then the board can become corrupt. My local is going through a transition from a corrupt board to an honest one. It's hard keeping the decepticons( people who deceive) at bay and my local only has 2000 members. I met people who had 150,000+ in their local. I can only imagine how hard it is for them to keep those in power in check. The larger unions are in the North and Midwest.

It wasn't just the black vote. Besides, it wasn't "98%" to begin with. Hillary did alot to quell the support for black folks. If she didn't act so arrogant regarding the nomination, she might, MIGHT have won. I don't think she'd know what humility looked like even if it sat on her lap and called her "mommy". Oh and they were some white folks who decided not to support her this time. They might have had a hand in it as well.
